The Artist & Legacy

Floyd Newsum Jr.

"Art is a critical part of my life that I cannot divorce. What inspires me now is to continue to share what I do with the world … What inspires me is that it's not over, it is the beginning of a new era…" — Floyd Newsum Jr. (1950–2024, quoted 2023)

Painter, beloved educator, cultural anchor, and cofounder of Project Row Houses, Newsum taught for 48 years at the University of Houston–Downtown, shaping generations of Houston artists before his passing in 2024. The Journey Never Ends takes its title and point of departure from his 2005 oil-and-acrylic-on-paper painting of the same name, expanding it into a living artchive: part exhibition, part classroom, part broadcast.

  • Quentin Pace — artist-archivist
  • Anthony J. Suber — multidisciplinary artist-professor
ACT II
